From Our Founder: The Birth of Venus

Hi Venuses!

I thought it was about time to introduce myself to this incredible community that has blossomed in the past two months. I'm Jordan, you can call me Jordy, and I created Venus with the help of my amazing friends and women around me. I've always been a huge proponent of increasing female representation. Growing up, my mom played me The Cranberries, Debbie Harry, The Pretenders, Eurthymics, Rozalla, Fleetwood Mac, and so many other incredible female musicians. As I got older I started to realize that they weren't paid attention to as much as male fronted bands, despite being just as talented-- or even more so. Once I got to college and decided to study geology I began to notice the gender gap in science more. I've had relatives warn me about working in an oil related field -arguably the highest paying field for a geologist- because oil is a "good ol' boys club". I've heard stories from my female friends in geology about being told that women should stay in the lab because they aren't cut out for field work. Throughout my entire life so far I have seen women struggle to be heard, to be seen, to be appreciated and I decided I had had enough. Cue the creation of Venus.

Venus was probably an idea in the back of my head since I could form thoughts. My mom recently sent me this journal entry she found from when I was young where I mention a "girl God". Here I am roughly 15 years later, still strongly feeling that women are the center of everything. Without us, nothing would exist-- literally you would not exist without a woman. So I got to thinking. Women have done so much on this planet and gotten little to no credit for it for much of history. That's why I started Venus. I wanted to create an outlet to bring light to the accomplishments and talents of the incredible women who aren't getting the recognition they deserve. I wanted to have a forum for women to write about things that matter to them. Every woman I know is doing something worth talking about it, whether it be scientific research, creating, or advocating. Venus is my way of celebrating them and the showing the rest of the world that women are at the front of almost every field.

Fast forward two months and here we are. It has been so inspiring to have women come forward wanting to contribute and celebrate with us. The women who have become my staff amaze me daily and I am so proud to have the team I do. I am constantly impressed with their work and I’m incredibly excited to continue to feature their skills and talents in 2017. We have lots of ideas cooking and I’m confident we’ll accomplish great things this year. After all, there is nothing stronger than united women. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for supporting us as we are growing and I hope we can continue to grow together. Venus is a product of our community and we wouldn't be able to do it without you.

From one Venus to another, I hope you all have an incredible year full of female friendships, love, and strength. We'll be here with you every step of the way.
