Must Watch: Mustang

Now that you're reading this article, there is no reason to scroll past this hidden gem in your Netflix options. Mustang, the 2015 film directed by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, is one of those movies that I feel the need to tell everyone about. Not only is it beautiful to look at, but the storyline had me crying for the characters that I came to love. The film captured the forced maturity of five young girls as they attempt to survive in a suffocating household. It was created by two women, which made it easier for me to watch and eventually empathize with certain characters. The director, Deniz Gamze Ergüven, is best known for this movie, as it is seen as her debut film. According to IMDB, Diez met her co-writer at the Cannes Film Festival Atelier where they were the only two women in attendance. Women like Diez and her co-writer, Alice Winocour, are incredibly talented, and have shown this in the production of Mustang. Women in cinema are well deserved-- Diez and Alice are living proof. Now that you know the director and co-writer are credible, you can watch the movie in peace; just keep a box of tissues near.
