(The first paragraph is a brief history of films 1-4 with spoilers. No spoilers for Blood Wars!)

As the fifth installment of the Underworld franchise, Blood Wars DOES NOT disappoint. I left this movie so happy with how it turned out. Some of you may not be familiar with the entire story, which you need to understand this movie, so Venus is here to help you out. The story begins with the introduction of Selene in the first Underworld (2003), a vampire death dealer. Death dealers are responsible for killing lycans, a second breed of werewolves. Selene was turned and affiliated into her vampire clan by Viktor, an elder. Elders are the highest seated vampires of all of the covens. In the first film, Selene becomes torn between fighting for her coven and falling in love with Micheal Corvin, a decedent of Corvinus (the first one with vampire/lycan blood) and key to the integration of the blood lines, which is unheard of. Michael becomes the first hybrid after getting bitten by Lucian (leader of the lycans at this time) and then getting bit by Selene. The hunter becomes the hunted at the end of the movie after Selene kills Viktor after learning of his treachery. The second film Underworld: Evolution (2006) follows Selene and Michael as they now must battle Marcus, the vampire son of Corvinus and last elder to their coven. Marcus is in search of his lycan brother William who has been imprisoned for centuries by the command of Viktor. Key things about this movie would be when Michael and Selene have sex (very key), Selene bites Corvinus becoming a type of hybrid herself, and the end where Michael manages to kill William and Selene kills Marcus. The next film in the franchise, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009), is actually a prequel to the entire story. Taking place six centuries before the first film, Rise of the Lycans presents the forbidden love story behind Lucian, a lycan slave, and Sonja, Viktors daughter. Their relationship leads to the war between the vampires and lycans and the unfortunate sentencing to death for Sonja by her own father, Viktor. Underworld: Awakening (2012), the fourth film, again takes place in the present day. Humans have captured Selene for testing at the biotech corporation, Antigen, and she awakes to find twelve years have passed. The vampire and lycan bloodlines are withering away due to the humans, and the lycans are now in search of Eve, Selene and Michaels hybrid daughter, to strengthen their kind. Now Selene is joined by David, a vampire and important figure in Blood Wars, to destroy Antigen and protect her daughter. In this movie, Selene only has visions of Michael, and is not sure if he is dead or alive. The last few minutes of the movie suggest he may be alive.

Finally, we have arrived at Blood Wars. This movie is probably the most action-packed of all the Underworld installments. And it is the first time you get to see a variety of vampires. Selene and her daughter Eve have now been separated in order to protect her from the vampire and lycan clans. Marius is now head of the lycans and organizes an army to attack all of the covens. As seen in the trailers, Selene develops never before seen powers and a bit of blonde hair. Find out what this means and go watch Underworld: Blood Wars in theaters now! If you are an Underworld fan like me, there is no doubt you will enjoy this film!
