Lorde's 'Green Light' is the Long-Awaited Anthem We Deserve
After over three long years since her first album, Lorde has released her first single off her second album ‘Melodrama’ and I couldn’t be happier. In her previous album ‘Pure Heroine,’ Lorde highlighted the suburban boredom Hollywood doesn’t understand. It was angsty and throbbing and had a message wrapped in serene melodies. And now Lorde gave us back everything we missed about that angst- but with a fun twist.
In this new single Lorde explores heartbreak and the messy feelings that come with it. The upbeat feel of the song reminds us that heartbreak is so much more than feeling sad. It’s furious, it’s scary, it’s freedom. In an interview with Zane Lowe, Lorde shares that “The song is really about those moments kind of immediately after your life changes and about all the silly little things that you gravitate towards. I say, “She thinks you love the beach, you’re such a liar”. What the fuck, she thinks you like the beach?! You don’t like the beach! It’s those little stupid things. It sounds so happy and then the lyrics are so intense obviously. And I realized I was like, “how come this thing is coming out so joyous sounding?” And I realized this is that drunk girl at the party dancing around crying about her ex-boyfriend who everyone thinks is a mess. That’s her tonight and tomorrow she starts to rebuild. And that’s the song for me.”
This song makes me want to scream and laugh and dance and cry. And Lorde is reminding us that it is okay to feel all of that. Heartbreak is hard. When it happens, we know we have a long difficult road ahead of us. And sometimes we need a minute before we’re ready to start on that road. Sometimes you have to let yourself loose before you can go forward. So, thank you Lorde. I needed that. And I can’t wait to hear the rest.
