WHO ARE YOU? TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF, HEY, EVEN BRAG A LITTLE.

Adara is a singer-songwriter who is originally from Arizona. She moved to LA at the age of 18 to pursue her passion for music. She eventually found her way to Austin where she started the acoustic duo turned indie rock band Sedona Skies. In addition to rocking out on stage with her full band she recently started her own artist management company that helps manage promising local acts and is the Chapter Leader in Austin for #WomenCrush Music!

TELL US ABOUT THE WORK YOU ARE DOING AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT.

When I first moved to Austin I was determined to find a community that I felt a part of. I eventually met my guitarist Carissa and we started going to Open Mics together. Slowly but surely we became part of a community of strangers that now feel as close as family. What most people don’t realize about being an artist is that having a community of people cheering you on and supporting you is crucial to your success. For females this can be even more difficult of an industry and community to break into. I want to continue to foster a community that elevates female artists and give them the support they need to be successful.

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME CHALLENGES IN PURSUING THIS WORK?

I think the biggest challenge any female has in any industry is being taken seriously. I have had males tell me the only reason me and my bandmate get gigs is because we’re two “cute girls”. Breaking that stigma of being more than just a pretty face is the hardest challenge any female faces. As infuriating as that stigma can be I think it’s what pushes me to work harder. It’s also important to have that community of females who understand the issues you face to lean on in those difficult times. I want anyone doubting me or any female artist to know that the reason we get gigs and I get the opportunities to work for amazing organizations like #WomenCrush is because we work harder than anyone else to make our dreams a reality.

WHERE AND HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOU IN YOUR QUEST?

If you're a female artist wanting to get involved I encourage you to join our Facebook group for #WomenCrush Artists in Austin. On 2/28 we will be hosting our first meet-up in Austin! It will be hosted at cu29 cocktail bar starting at 7p. On 3/29 we will be having our next female artist showcase! It will be at One 2 One bar with artists including all female artists including The Sophies,  Born Again Virgins, Slow Cooked and more! Doors are at 7p.

You can also support my personal musical ventures by giving my band, Sedona Skies, a follow.

WHO INSPIRES YOU, ADARA?

I feel very fortunate that all of my life I've had a lot of strong independent females to look up to. The women in my family have always pushed me to work hard to achieve my dreams and aspirations.
